Week 8 · ACC game
Our breakdown
Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 22, 8:19 PM ET.
The story
Boston College arrives in Atlanta at 3-3 after snapping a two-game skid with a win over Pittsburgh, while Georgia Tech sits at 2-4 following a 34-24 loss at Virginia Tech on Oct. 17. Both teams are 1-2 in ACC play. For fantasy, the most useful names are a dual-threat quarterback facing a generous defense and two Georgia Tech skill players whose roles are expanding.
The angle
Georgia Tech carries an implied 28 points and Boston College an implied 22.5. Neither offense points to an extreme game, so usage and matchups decide this one. The clearest edge belongs to the Boston College side: Georgia Tech fields the 29th-worst pass defense in FBS, rated per play. Boston College's defense rates above average against quarterbacks, running backs and receivers, so Georgia Tech's starters need their volume to carry them.
Start 'em
Mason McKenzie is Boston College's starting QB and the engine of its ground game. He has carried 18.3 times a game over his last three games, 51 percent of the team's carries, up from 47 percent before that, with 73 rushing yards and 205 passing yards a game over that stretch. He has averaged 20.8 points a game this season and 22.8 over his last three, with a season high of 30.2. Georgia Tech is the 25th-worst defense against quarterbacks in FBS. Start him, because a rushing role that size sets a high floor against a defense this soft.
Trelain Maddox is in a timeshare with Justice Haynes: Haynes has 57 percent of Georgia Tech's carries over the last three games and Maddox 35 percent, so neither is the lead. Part of that shift came in a game Haynes did not play. Maddox has averaged 9.3 carries and three catches a game over his last three games, up from 1.5 catches before that. The school's official athletics site said he carried the load against Virginia Tech, with 12 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown plus three catches. He has played in five of Georgia Tech's six games, averaging 13.6 points this season and 24 over his last three, with a high of 28.9. Boston College is above average against running backs, but his growing work in the passing game gives him the edge over Haynes. Start him, since his role keeps widening on both carries and catches.
Jordan Allen has become Georgia Tech's top target, catching eight passes a game over his last three games, up from 4.7 before that, for 31 percent of the team's catches. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets On SI wrote that he "has established himself as the guy." He has averaged 14.2 points this season and 19.4 over his last three, with a high of 25.9. Boston College's defense is above average against receivers, a top-40-percent unit, so this may not be his biggest week. Dalen Penson (Georgia Tech) shares the receiver room, but Allen's climbing catch total settles that choice. Allen is a start, because volume like his tends to hold up against a sturdy defense.
Value
Javarius Green has caught 25 percent of Boston College's passes over his last three games and averaged 10 points over that span. Georgia Tech is the 29th-worst defense against receivers in FBS, and at $5.1M he is projected for about 10. Alberto Mendoza (Georgia Tech) has thrown for 274 yards a game over his last three games, averaging 16.1 points, and at $6.2M he is projected for about 14.
Injuries and timeshares
Boston College's Evan Dickens is out for the season, and Reed Swanson is out. Georgia Tech's Malachi Hosley is out. Georgia Tech's backfield remains a split, with Justice Haynes at 57 percent of the carries over the last three games and Trelain Maddox at 35 percent.
TL;DR
Start McKenzie for his legs against a soft pass defense, ride Maddox and Allen on rising usage, and take Green as the value.
Line (as of Oct 22): Georgia Tech -5.5 · Total 50.5 (context only)
