Week 8 · SEC game

Our breakdown

Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 22, 8:19 PM ET.

The story

Kentucky has won five straight, most recently a 21-13 win at Oklahoma on Oct. 17, and sits 6-1 and 12th in the AP poll. Vanderbilt has lost four straight and is still winless in SEC play. For fantasy, most of the appeal sits on the Kentucky side, while Vanderbilt's case runs through one receiver.

The angle

Kentucky's offense averages 32.7 points a game and carries an implied 31.5 points against the 24th-worst scoring defense in FBS. Vanderbilt is below average against quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends, so Kenny Minchey (Kentucky) and both of his main pass catchers have room to work. Vanderbilt, at an implied 21 points, funnels its passing game to Junior Sherrill, who has 37 percent of the catches over the last three games. He faces a Kentucky pass defense that grades above average per play, in the top 30 percent of FBS.

Start 'em

Junior Sherrill is Vanderbilt's passing game. He has caught 37 percent of the team's passes over the last three games, up from 27 percent before that, and averages 6.7 catches a game in that span. He has scored 18.3 points a game this season and 19.4 over his last three, with a high of 28.8, and he has reached double figures in each of his last five games. Kentucky's above-average defense against receivers may cap the top end. Ja'Cory Thomas has played in five of Vanderbilt's seven games and averaged 10 points over his last three, well short of Sherrill's output. Treat Sherrill as a safe floor, because his volume holds up against a good defense.

Willie Rodriguez shares Kentucky's passing work with Kenny Darby. Rodriguez has 22 percent of the catches over the last three games and Darby 29 percent, and Rodriguez has averaged 5.3 catches a game in that span. He has scored 11 points a game this season and 13.5 over his last three, with a 20.8-point high showing how far a touchdown-heavy day can carry him. Vanderbilt is below average against tight ends, in the bottom 40 percent of FBS. Use him as a ceiling play, since steady catches against a soft spot give him room to spike.

Kenny Minchey is Kentucky's starting QB. He has thrown for 225 yards a game over his last three games, and his running has grown to 7.3 carries a game in that span, up from 4.3 before. He has averaged 16.5 points this season and 18.6 over his last three, with a high of 29.7. Vanderbilt is below average against quarterbacks and allows 7.3 yards per pass attempt, a below-average mark per play. Minchey is a ceiling play, with both his arm and his legs pointed at a defense that gives up chunks through the air.

Kenny Darby has been a steady target for Kentucky. He has averaged seven catches a game over his last three games, up from 3.3 before that, and that run includes a 12-catch game. He has scored 13.8 points a game this season and 16 over his last three, with a high of 27.6. Vanderbilt is below average against receivers, in the bottom 40 percent of FBS, and Nic Anderson (Kentucky), who had a real share of the catches, is listed as out. Count Darby as a ceiling play, because his catch total has more than doubled and he gets a matchup that rewards volume.

Value

Jared Curtis has played in six of Vanderbilt's seven games and has thrown for 248 yards a game over his last two. He has added seven carries a game in that span. Kentucky is above average against quarterbacks, so expectations stay modest, but at $5.9M he is projected for about 12.

CJ Baxter has played in six of Kentucky's seven games. He has drawn 16 carries a game over his last three games, up from 13 before that, which is 43 percent of the team's carries. Vanderbilt is below average against running backs and allows 146 rushing yards a game. At $7.3M he is projected for about 15.

TL;DR

Lean on Minchey, Darby and Rodriguez against a soft Vanderbilt defense, trust Sherrill's volume for a safe floor, and consider Baxter and Curtis as values.

News

Willie Rodriguez TE

Willie Rodriguez caught 5 passes for 38 yards and 2 touchdowns in Kentucky's 21-13 win at Oklahoma on Oct. 17, good for 20.8 CollegeFFB points. Kentucky faces Vanderbilt on Oct. 24, and Rodriguez has been a consistent fantasy option, averaging 11 CollegeFFB points a game this season. At $5.6M, he looks like he could remain a busy part of the passing game.

Kenny Darby WR

Kenny Darby caught 4 passes for 79 yards in Kentucky's 35-34 win over LSU on Oct. 10, good for 11.9 CollegeFFB points. Averaging 14.7 points a game this season, with 5.7 catches per game over his previous 3 games, he could keep producing when Kentucky visits Oklahoma on Oct. 17, and at $5.2M he looks like solid value.
