Week 8 · SEC game

Our breakdown

Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 21, 2:20 PM ET.

The story

Alabama has lost two straight, most recently 26-10 at Tennessee on Oct. 17, and returns to Bryant-Denny Stadium needing a home win to steady its SEC season. Texas A&M is 1-3 in conference play but has scored easily in its home games. For fantasy, the Crimson Tide's offense carries this game, and its receiving corps is reshuffling around a key absence.

The angle

Neither offense points to an extreme game, so usage and matchups decide the lineup calls. Alabama's run defense is the eighth-best in FBS on a per-carry basis, which squeezes a Texas A&M backfield already split three ways. On the other side, Ryan Coleman-Williams is out, which spreads Alabama's catches among the receivers who remain and gives Keelon Russell's supporting cast more work.

Start 'em

Keelon Russell (Alabama) has been the most reliable producer in this game, averaging 22.4 points a game this season and 17 over his last three games, with a season high of 40.1. His legs add a cushion. He has run 8.3 times a game over his last three games while throwing for 206 yards a game. Texas A&M is an above-average defense against quarterbacks, a top-30-percent unit, so this may not be one of his biggest weeks. Projected for about 23, he is still the top play in this game. Call him a safe floor, because his rushing work protects him even when the passing game stalls.

Rico Scott has caught about 19 percent of Alabama's passes over his last three games, averaging 3.3 catches a game and 12.2 points in that span against 9.8 this season, with a season high of 22. With Coleman-Williams (Alabama) out, that share has room to grow. Texas A&M is above average against receivers, a top-30-percent group, but steady volume travels. Lotzeir Brooks (Alabama) has averaged 8.3 points over his last three games, so Scott earns the spot ahead of him. Start Scott, since his catches have held firm while the room around him thins out.

Sit 'em

Rueben Owens took 18 percent of Texas A&M's carries over his last three games, down from 38 percent before that, and his scoring fell along with that share. Alabama has the eighth-best run defense in FBS, which leaves little room for a back with a smaller piece of a crowded committee. Fade him, because the workload and the matchup both point the wrong way.

Value

Trae'shawn Brown has taken 32 percent of Alabama's carries over his last three games, up from 19 percent before that, and has averaged 11.2 points over that stretch. Texas A&M's run defense is above average, a top-25-percent unit, so this is not a soft spot. At $5.0M and projected for about 11, his larger share of the backfield gives him a real chance to pay off his price.

Injuries and timeshares

Texas A&M's Mario Craver and Ashton Bethel-Roman are questionable. KBTX reported that Craver was not suited up on Oct. 17, and Texas A&M Aggies On SI reported that he has been dealing with an ankle injury first suffered against LSU on Sept. 26. If Craver sits, TK Norman gains, and he has caught 23 percent of the team's passes over his last three games. The Aggies' backfield is a timeshare. Over the last three games, KJ Edwards has 27 percent of the carries, Jamarion Morrow 23 percent and Carsyn Baker 23 percent. Morrow has played in four of Texas A&M's seven games, and Baker has played in six.

Alabama's Ezavier Crowell and Cederian Morgan are questionable. Coach Kalen DeBoer said Crowell has a lower leg injury and that he did not expect him to practice early in the week. Ryan Coleman-Williams is out, and WVTM 13 reported that Alabama will be without him for the foreseeable future as he recovers from knee surgery.

TL;DR

Lean on Russell's floor and Scott's steady catches, take Brown as the value, and keep Texas A&M's backs out of lineups against Alabama's run defense.
