Week 8 · Big Ten game

Our breakdown

Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 22, 8:19 PM ET.

The story

UCLA is 6-0, has won six straight and sits ninth in the AP poll after a 17-7 win over Wisconsin on Oct. 17. Michigan State is 2-5 and has lost five straight, including one-score losses to Illinois and Northwestern. For fantasy, the Bruins' backfield is the clear draw, and the Spartans have usable pieces with tough paths.

The angle

This sets up as a lower-scoring game with a 43.5-point total, which puts more weight on steady volume than on big plays. UCLA carries an implied 29.5 points behind an offense averaging 35.5 a game, while Michigan State sits at an implied 14. UCLA's defense is top 15 against every position, so Michigan State's production should come from the few players with real roles.

Start 'em

Wayne Knight is part of a UCLA backfield rotation, but he has handled 15 carries and 3 catches a game over his last three games. He has been a steady producer, averaging 25.6 points a game this season and 20.3 over his last three, with a season high of 35. Michigan State is about average against running backs and allows 141 rushing yards a game, a manageable spot for a back with that kind of workload. Anthony Woods (UCLA) shares the backfield, but Knight has averaged 20.3 points over the last three games to Woods's 9.9. Knight is a start because his workload and output both clearly lead this game.

Risky plays

Jaziun Patterson has taken over Michigan State's backfield. He has 16.7 carries a game over his last three games, up from 8.7 a game before that, and 51 percent of the team's carries in that stretch. He has averaged 11.5 points a game this season and 19 over his last three, and his season high of 38.9 came in the 38-37 loss to Illinois on Oct. 10. He has played in six of Michigan State's seven games. UCLA is the 13th-best run defense in FBS, it allows 98 rushing yards a game, and Michigan State has an implied 14 points. He is also listed Questionable, so check his status before kickoff. Patterson is risky: the volume is real, but the run defense he faces is one of the best.

Jayden Savoury is Michigan State's most frequent receiving option, catching 4.7 passes a game over his last three games. He has been consistent, averaging 7.6 points a game this season and 8.3 over his last three, with a season high of 10.9. The obstacle is UCLA, the eighth-best defense against tight ends in FBS and the 11th-best pass defense. Savoury is risky because his steady catches run straight into one of the stingiest coverage units at his position.

Value

Alessio Milivojevic has averaged 14.2 points over his last three games as Michigan State's starting QB, up from 10.4 a game this season. His season high of 22.3 came in the 24-21 loss to Northwestern on Oct. 17, when he threw for 216 yards and two touchdowns and added a rushing score. At $5.1M he is projected for about 8. UCLA's 11th-best pass defense keeps that modest. He is listed Questionable.

Injuries and timeshares

Michigan State's Jaziun Patterson and Alessio Milivojevic are Questionable. If Patterson sits, Marvis Parrish stands to gain; he has 15 percent of the team's carries over his last three games. Patterson's backfield partner Cam Edwards, who had 36 percent of the carries to Patterson's 51 percent over the last three games, is out for the season. The Spartans' Cam Fancher and Charles Taplin are out. UCLA's Nico Iamaleava and Mikey Matthews are out for the season.

TL;DR

Start Wayne Knight with confidence, treat Patterson and Savoury as risky against a stout UCLA defense, and keep Milivojevic as a modest value if he is cleared.
