Our breakdown
Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 21, 8:20 PM ET.
The story
James Madison has won seven straight, and the Dukes arrive in Boone with an offense averaging 42.9 points a game and a defense allowing 16. App State has been uneven but is coming off a 35-32 win at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 16. For fantasy, the Dukes' offense carries most of the appeal, with one App State receiver worth a spot.
The angle
This sets up as a game with plenty of scoring, which leaves room for big outings on both sides. The clearest opening is on the ground: App State's run defense is below average on a per-carry basis, in the bottom 30 percent of FBS, which favors James Madison's backfield. Going the other way is harder, because James Madison's defense allows 16 points a game, a top-20-percent mark, so App State's skill players face a tougher test.
Start 'em
George Pettaway takes 40 percent of James Madison's carries over the last three games, about 16 carries a game in a backfield that spreads the work around. He has turned that into 23 points a game over that span, up from 18 a game this season, with a season high of 32.6. App State is below average against running backs, in the bottom 30 percent of FBS, and a game with plenty of scoring adds to the upside. Call him a ceiling play: the carry volume against a soft run front puts a big day well within reach.
Camden Coleman (James Madison) is the starting QB for an offense averaging 42.9 points a game, and he is throwing for 206 yards a game over his last three games while adding about five carries a game. He has averaged 16.9 points this season and 17.5 over his last three games, with a high of 26.3, and has reached at least 14 in four of his last five games. App State's pass defense is below average on a per-attempt basis, allowing 215 passing yards a game. Treat Coleman as a safe floor, since his steady passing workload rarely leaves him short.
Sam Pickett shares App State's receiving work: Nate Branch has 24 percent of the team's catches over the last three games and Pickett 20 percent, about four catches a game. Pickett has made more of his chances, averaging 15.6 points this season and 14.5 over his last three games, with a high of 24.6; Branch has averaged 9 over that same stretch, which is why Pickett is the one to own. James Madison is above average against receivers, in the top 30 percent of FBS, so this may not be a big week by his standards. Start Pickett anyway, because his production has held steady even when the catches are split.
Value
Corey Scott has played in six of James Madison's seven games and has averaged 16.2 points over his last three, up from 13.2 a game this season. App State is below average against receivers, in the bottom 40 percent of FBS, and the high-scoring setup keeps his ceiling open. At $7.5M, he is projected for about 13, a reasonable price for a receiver producing at this level.
Injuries and timeshares
App State's Malachi Singleton is Questionable. If he sits, Henry Hasselbeck takes over at QB; he has thrown for 35 yards a game over his last three games, and he ran 21 times for 125 yards in the win at Coastal Carolina, where The Associated Press reported his touchdown pass was his first. App State's Treyaun Webb, Dazmin James, J'Marion Burnette and Dillon Galloway are also Questionable. In James Madison's backfield, Seth Cromwell has 23 percent of the carries over the last three games to Pettaway's 40 percent.
TL;DR
Ride Pettaway for the ceiling and Coleman for the floor, grab Corey Scott as the value, and start Pickett over Branch on the App State side.
Kicked off at 7:00 PM ET. The recap posts after the final.
