Week 8 · ACC game
Our breakdown
Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 21, 2:20 PM ET.
The story
Duke arrives at Scott Stadium on a two-game losing streak, most recently falling 24-20 to North Carolina on Oct. 17 after losing at Georgia Tech a week earlier. Virginia beat Syracuse on Oct. 10 and then lost at SMU, so both ACC teams need this one to stay in the conference race. For fantasy, the game runs through the backfields, with Nate Sheppard (Duke) at the center of it.
The angle
Neither offense points to a shootout, and this one is expected to be close, so usage decides the lineup calls. Duke funnels its offense through Sheppard, who has 55 percent of the carries over the last three games. Virginia spreads its catches around and splits its backfield, which pushes the value toward whoever is gaining carries. Duke is a tough place to run, with a top-25-percent run defense that allows 93 rushing yards a game.
Start 'em
Nate Sheppard is Duke's offense in both phases. He has 55 percent of the team's carries over the last three games, averaging 18.7 carries a game, and his receiving role has grown to 6.3 catches a game over that span, up from three a game before that. Against Georgia Tech on Oct. 10 he ran 27 times for two touchdowns and caught seven passes for 91 yards. Virginia's defense against running backs is above average, but his catch volume is hard to contain. He has averaged 34.3 points a game this season and 30.6 over his last three games, with a season high of 41.8. Start him; the dual workload gives him the highest floor and ceiling in this game.
Beau Pribula stays useful because he keeps running. He has 11.3 carries a game over his last three games, up from 8.5 before that, and that rushing role holds up even in weeks when the passing game is quiet. Duke's defense is about average against quarterbacks, and its pass defense allows 6.7 yards per attempt, about average on a per-play basis. He has averaged 17.3 points a game this season with a high of 35.6, and he is projected for about 16 points this week. Treat him as a safe floor, since his legs keep him involved in every script.
Jekail Middlebrook has taken over more of Virginia's backfield. He averaged 13.7 carries a game over his last three games, up from 10 before that, and his share of the carries climbed to 39 percent over that span from 23 percent earlier. Against SMU on Oct. 17 he ran 14 times for 59 yards and caught three passes. Duke's top-25-percent run defense is a real obstacle, but growing volume in a committee is what lifts a back's floor. He has averaged 14.4 points a game over his last three games, compared with 11.5 for the season. Start him; the carries are moving his way.
Injuries and timeshares
Virginia's Kameron Courtney is questionable. If he sits, Da'Shawn Martin stands to gain, since he has 21 percent of the team's catches over his last three games. Virginia's Peyton Lewis is doubtful. Rico Flores Jr. is out. Virginia Cavaliers On SI reported that Flores was hurt in a non-contact injury against Syracuse, and that the team was awaiting imaging results.
TL;DR
Start Sheppard without hesitation, lean on Pribula's rushing floor, and trust Middlebrook's growing carry share despite a tough Duke run defense.
Line (as of Oct 22): Virginia -2.2 · Total 47.5 (context only)
