Week 8 · MAC game

Our breakdown

Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 21, 2:20 PM ET.

The story

Buffalo has won two straight and sits at 4-3, while Bowling Green is 2-5 overall but 2-1 in the MAC after losing 32-31 to Ball State on Oct. 17. With both teams tied in the conference standings, this Week 8 game at UB Stadium carries real stakes. For fantasy, the most useful pieces are a Buffalo backfield that has turned into a one-man show and a Bowling Green QB whose role keeps growing.

The angle

This sets up as a lower-scoring game, so steady volume should matter more than chasing big plays. That favors Buffalo's ground game, which faces the 14th-worst run defense in FBS. Bowling Green allows 210 rushing yards a game, about 70 more than the average FBS defense. Buffalo's defense is about average against the run and against quarterbacks but below average against receivers, which gives Bowling Green's spread-out passing game a workable path.

Start 'em

Jay Kastantin has become a bigger part of Bowling Green's offense. He has taken 21 percent of the team's carries over the last three games, up from 16 percent before that, and he has thrown for 212 yards a game over that stretch. He has averaged 18.1 points over his last three games against 11.3 this season, with a season high of 21.5. Buffalo is about average against quarterbacks, so nothing in this matchup should knock his production down. Projected for about 13, he is a safe floor, because his rushing work keeps him useful even when the passing game stalls.

Brennan Ridley is catching more of Bowling Green's passes, averaging four catches a game over his last three games, up from 2.5 a game before that. He shares the work. Ridley has 22 percent of the team's catches over the last three games, and Joseph Saffold (Bowling Green) has 23 percent in the one game he has played. Buffalo's pass coverage is below average against receivers, in the bottom 40 percent of FBS. Ridley has averaged 13.4 points over his last three games, up from 8.2 this season, and his season high is 18.6. He's a start, since the growing volume meets a secondary he can work against.

Messiah Burch is Buffalo's lead back, with 50 percent of the carries over the last three games. He has averaged 22.7 carries a game in that span, up from 12.5 a game before that, and 138 rushing yards a game. Bowling Green is the 12th-worst defense in FBS against running backs, which is the best possible spot for a back with this much work. He has averaged 18 points over his last three games and 12.2 this season, with a season high of 19.7. Call him a ceiling play: heavy carries against a defense this soft give him the highest upside in this game.

Risky plays

Chance Morrow is Buffalo's top target and its most explosive player. He has averaged 16.8 points this season and posted a season high of 40.3. His share has dropped sharply, though. He has 17 percent of the team's catches over his last two games, down from 34 percent earlier, and he has averaged 8.5 points over his last three games. Clint Walker has drawn 27 percent of Buffalo's catches over the last three games to Morrow's 29 percent, so the looks are now split between them. Bowling Green is below average against receivers, in the bottom 30 percent of FBS, which keeps his upside alive. Still, he is risky, because a lower-scoring game and a split passing game leave his recent volume too thin to trust.

Injuries and timeshares

Bowling Green's Nick Sowell is questionable. Buffalo's Terrance Shelton and Tyrell Simmons are also questionable, and Elijah Holmes is out for the season. Shelton has played in two of Buffalo's seven games, and he took 42 percent of the carries in those games. Burch has 50 percent of the carries over the last three games. Shelton is questionable, so check his status before lineups lock; our read is that his return could cut into Burch's workload.

TL;DR

Start Burch for his ceiling against a weak run defense, lean on Kastantin's floor and Ridley's rising volume, and treat Morrow as an upside gamble.

News

Messiah Burch RB

Messiah Burch ran 28 times for 172 yards in Buffalo's 25-18 win over Massachusetts on Oct. 17, good for 17.2 CollegeFFB points. He should keep getting chances in the Buffalo backfield, having averaged 22 carries a game in the 3 games before that, and he has been a steady producer, averaging 12.2 points a game this season. At $6M, he looks like a useful RB option when Buffalo faces Bowling Green, which allows the 8th-most yards per carry in FBS, on Oct. 24.

Buffalo Athletics · CBS Sports

Clint Walker TE

Clint Walker caught 7 passes for 45 yards and 2 touchdowns in Buffalo's 25-18 win over Massachusetts on Oct. 17, good for 23.5 CollegeFFB points. At $5.4M, the Buffalo tight end has averaged 7.9 points a game this season and looks lined up for more chances when Buffalo faces Bowling Green on Oct. 24.

Averaging 10.7 points a game this season, Kastantin could add to that dual-threat output when Bowling Green faces Ball State on Oct. 17, and at $5M his rushing work gives him a useful floor.

Austyn Dendy RB

Austyn Dendy ran 15 times for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns in Bowling Green's 38-10 win over Sacramento State on Oct. 10, good for 20.6 CollegeFFB points that game.
