The story
South Alabama has won two straight, most recently a 56-49 shootout at Arkansas State on Oct. 8, and sits unbeaten in Sun Belt play. Marshall has lost two straight, falling at James Madison and then at home to Coastal Carolina on Oct. 10, and is still looking for its first conference win. For fantasy, the most useful fact about this Week 8 game is how little either defense has stopped anyone.
The angle
South Alabama allows 34.5 points a game this season, the eighth-worst scoring defense in FBS and about 11 more than the average FBS defense. Marshall is close behind at 33.7 a game this season, the 10th-worst, roughly 10 more than average. That points to a high-scoring game that should stay close. Both teams spread the ball among receivers and run committee backfields, so the quarterbacks are the cleanest way to tap into the scoring.
Start 'em
Jared Hollins (South Alabama) has added a real rushing role to his passing: he has averaged 7.3 carries over his last three games, up from three a game before that, while throwing for 221 yards a game over that stretch. Marshall is a below-average defense against quarterbacks, in the bottom 30 percent of FBS, and the scoring environment favors him. He has averaged 22.2 points over his last three games against 16.1 this season, with a season high of 27.2. Hollins is a ceiling play, because his legs give him a second path to a big total in a shootout.
Carlos Del Rio-Wilson is Marshall's starting QB, throwing for 215 yards a game and running 8.3 times a game over his last three games. South Alabama is the 12th-worst defense against quarterbacks and the 12th-worst pass defense in FBS, allowing 264 passing yards a game this season. He has averaged 13.4 points this season and owns a 28.2-point high, which shows what this matchup can produce. The Herald-Dispatch reported that the starting quarterback call belongs to coach Tony Gibson. Del Rio-Wilson gets the nod over Khalil Wilkins (Marshall), having averaged 11.7 points over his last three games to Wilkins's 8.4. He is a ceiling play, since a weak pass defense gives his range room to run.
Risky plays
Keenan Phillips (South Alabama) showed his upside in the win at Arkansas State on Oct. 8, running 19 times for 157 yards and three touchdowns, and has averaged 19 points over his last three games. Marshall is normally a defense to target at running back as the sixth-worst in FBS against the position. The problem is the split: he has handled about 30 percent of the carries over his last three games, and his lead in that backfield came in one game, not a new role. He is risky, because a committee caps his share of the work.
Judah Price has the busiest recent stretch of any Marshall back, averaging 7 carries and 2.3 catches over his last three games after 3.5 carries and no catches before that. South Alabama is the fifth-worst defense in FBS against running backs, a spot you would normally chase, and Jo'Shon Barbie (Marshall) is listed as out. Still, Price has handled about 20 percent of the carries over his last three games, which leaves little margin. Price remains a risky play, as his slice of the backfield is still small.
Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw has been Marshall's most productive receiver, averaging 15.1 points over his last three games with a 32.1-point season high. South Alabama is the fifth-worst defense in FBS against receivers. His share of the catches has dipped to about 14 percent over his last three games, down from about 22 percent before that, in a spread passing game. He is ahead of Owen Sweeney (Marshall), who has averaged 9.3 points over that span. Turner-Bradshaw is risky, since thin volume makes his ceiling hard to reach.
Toby Payne (Marshall) draws an ideal matchup on paper: South Alabama is the fourth-worst defense in FBS against tight ends. He has caught 3.7 passes a game over his last three games, but that is about 14 percent of the catches, and he has averaged 7.1 points over that stretch. Modest usage blunts an otherwise inviting spot, which makes Payne a risky play.
TL;DR
Start Hollins and Del Rio-Wilson as ceiling plays in a likely shootout, and treat every back, receiver and tight end here as a risky dart.
Final: Marshall 20-13.
