Our breakdown as published before the game

Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 20, 2:20 PM ET.

The story

Middle Tennessee and Florida International meet at Pitbull Stadium on Oct. 20 with identical 3-3 records and 1-1 marks in Conference USA play. The Blue Raiders edged Delaware 33-30 on Oct. 13 after being shut out at Kansas. The Panthers had a two-game winning streak snapped with a narrow loss at Jacksonville State. For fantasy, nobody here earns a clean start, so every call carries some risk.

The angle

This sets up as a lower-scoring game, so steady volume counts for more than big plays. Florida International's defense drives that: it is the ninth-best scoring defense in FBS at 14.7 points a game and the 12th-best pass defense, which squeezes every Middle Tennessee pass catcher. Middle Tennessee's run defense is the 14th-worst in FBS at 196 rushing yards a game. But the Panthers split their carries in a committee, so no single back is set up to cash in.

Risky plays

Cam'ron Lacy is still Middle Tennessee's top receiver, with a 25.8-point season high and 16 points a game this season. The concern is how the work has spread out. He has caught 24 percent of the team's passes over the last three games, down from 40 percent before that, and his catches fell from 7.7 a game to 4. Florida International is above average against receivers, a top-20-percent unit, and Roman Gagliano (Middle Tennessee) has thrown for 196 yards a game over his last three. Lacy edges Neo Clifton (Middle Tennessee), 10.6 points a game to 9.4 over their last three, so if you play a Blue Raiders receiver, play him. He's risky, since a shrinking share runs into a stingy secondary.

Maguire Anderson has been Florida International's most dependable producer, averaging 19.7 points a game this season and 17.2 over his last three. He posted 8 catches, 133 yards and 2 touchdowns at Jacksonville State on Oct. 13. Middle Tennessee is about average against receivers, the friendliest draw any pass catcher gets in this game. What holds him back is the shape of the role: his catches dropped from 7 a game to 4 over the last three games, and his share of the catches slid from 28 percent to 24 percent. JoJo Stone (Florida International) trails him at 13.8 points a game over the same stretch. Call Anderson risky: the talent is obvious, but the week-to-week work isn't settled.

JJ Kohl (Florida International) has a 37.5-point game this season, and Middle Tennessee is normally a defense to attack at his position as the 10th-worst defense against quarterbacks in FBS. The trouble is that nobody on Florida International has earned full confidence. Kohl has averaged 9.4 points over his last three games against 15.1 this season, and his carries have dipped from 5.7 a game to 4.3. The Panthers also score 19.7 points a game, and this contest is expected to stay low. He is projected for about 17, so the upside is real, but he's risky because a soft matchup has to lift a passing game averaging 176 yards over his last three.

Sit 'em

Antonio Martin still leads Middle Tennessee's backfield with 53 percent of the carries over the last three games. That is down from 62 percent before, and his workload fell from 15.7 carries a game to 12. Florida International is above average against running backs and holds teams to 101 rushing yards a game. At $8.4M, that is a steep price for a back averaging 5.8 points over his last three. Fade him, given a thinner workload against a sturdy front.

Tyson Carter has carved out more work lately, catching 14 percent of Florida International's passes over the last three games after 3 percent before that. That is still a small slice of a crowded receiving room in a low-scoring setup, even against Middle Tennessee's about-average coverage of receivers. Fade, since 2.7 catches a game leaves little room for a payoff.

Injuries and timeshares

Middle Tennessee's Koraun Perdue is Questionable. He caught 4 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown against Delaware on Oct. 13 and has drawn about 13 percent of the team's catches over his last three games, with an about-average defense against tight ends waiting. If he sits, Tayvion Galloway stands to gain, though his role so far is 7 percent of the team's catches over his last three games. Check Perdue's status before kickoff.

TL;DR

No safe starts here: lean on Anderson first, treat Kohl and Lacy as risky dart throws, and keep Martin and Carter on the bench.

News

Maguire Anderson WR

Maguire Anderson had 8 catches for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns, plus 1 carry for 5 yards, in Florida International's 27-24 loss at Jacksonville State on Oct. 13, good for 33.8 CollegeFFB points. He looks like a valuable option at $6.3M who should continue to get chances when Florida International hosts Middle Tennessee on Oct. 20, and he has produced all season, averaging 19.7 CollegeFFB points a game this season.

Koraun Perdue TE

Koraun Perdue caught 4 passes for 103 yards and 1 touchdown in Middle Tennessee's 33-30 win over Delaware on Oct. 13, good for 20.3 CollegeFFB points. He could see his share of targets grow given how he produced against Delaware, and at $5M he looks like a value TE as Middle Tennessee plays at Florida International on Oct. 20.

Roman Gagliano QB

Roman Gagliano threw for 291 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran 4 times for 22 yards and a score in Middle Tennessee's 33-30 win over Delaware on Oct. 13, good for 29.8 CollegeFFB points in that game.
