Week 8
Our breakdown
Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 21, 5:18 PM ET.
The story
Massachusetts has lost three straight, the latest 25-18 at Buffalo on Oct. 17, and travels to East Hartford to face a UConn team that won at Temple on Oct. 10 after two close losses. For fantasy, the Minutemen side is the one to study, because their passing game draws a UConn defense that has struggled to stop it all season.
The angle
UConn is tougher on the run than the pass, so the softer path runs through the air. Its pass defense sits in the bottom 25 percent of FBS on a per-play basis and gives up about 80 more passing yards a game than the average FBS defense. The catches are split, with T.Y. Harding (Massachusetts) at 35 percent and Jabari Lewis (Massachusetts) at 25 percent of the team's catches over the last three games, so neither is the lead. UConn is the 25th-worst defense against tight ends, but Massachusetts tight end Max Dowling's thin share of the work and modest recent output make that spot not worth chasing.
Risky plays
William Watson is the starting QB and has thrown nearly every Massachusetts pass. He has averaged 16.3 points a game this season, with a high of 27.2, and he has played in five of Massachusetts's seven games. His legs add a floor: 6.7 carries for 29 rushing yards a game over his last three games, on top of 157 passing yards. UConn is the 30th-worst defense against quarterbacks, which makes this a matchup to like. He is questionable, though, so the call is risky until his status clears before lineups lock.
T.Y. Harding (Massachusetts) is the most productive target in this offense. He has averaged 15.6 points a game this season with a high of 28.9, and he has played in six of Massachusetts's seven games. His catches have climbed to six a game over his last three games, up from 3.3 a game before that. UConn is the 26th-worst defense against wide receivers, normally a group to target. But nobody on Massachusetts has earned full confidence there, and Harding is questionable himself. He is risky: the matchup and volume are there, but his availability is uncertain.
Injuries and timeshares
Massachusetts's William Watson and T.Y. Harding are both questionable. If Watson sits, Aedan McCarthy gains the job; he has played in two of Massachusetts's seven games and averaged 91 passing yards a game over his last three games. If Harding sits, Jabari Lewis stands to gain after taking 25 percent of the team's catches over his last three games. Massachusetts's Aedan McCarthy, Joseph Griffin and Dallas Elliott are also questionable. The Daily Hampshire Gazette reported that Griffin missed a game with an injury. Jordan Washington is out for the season. The Massachusetts backfield is a timeshare, with Elijah Faulkner at 35 percent and Curtis Kimmons IV at 21 percent of the carries over the last three games.
TL;DR
Watson and Harding have the best matchups in this game against a soft UConn pass defense, but confirm both are active before locking them in.
