Our breakdown
Written before kickoff; projections as of Oct. 21, 2:20 PM ET.
The story
Louisiana comes to Hattiesburg at 5-2, fresh off a 33-6 win over Troy on Oct. 17, and has scored 30 points a game this season. Southern Miss has lost five straight and sits at 1-5, with a defense giving up 32.7 points a game, the 13th-worst scoring defense in FBS. For fantasy, the Louisiana offense has the friendlier path, but the best Southern Miss pieces still earn a spot.
The angle
Neither offense points to an extreme game, so usage and matchups should decide who pays off. Southern Miss has the sixth-worst run defense in FBS and allows 252 rushing yards a game, about 110 more than the average FBS defense. That spot is tempting, but Louisiana splits its carries among a committee, and even JJ Garner, the most productive of the group, has too thin a share to chase. On the other side, Steven Robinson has 51 percent of the Southern Miss carries over the last three games.
Start 'em
Lunch Winfield is the engine of the Louisiana offense as the starting QB, throwing for 166 yards and running 14 times for 54 yards a game over his last three games. He has handled about a third of the team's carries in that stretch, which gives him a rushing floor on top of the passing work. Southern Miss is the 21st-worst defense against quarterbacks and the 19th-worst pass defense in FBS, a soft draw on both fronts. He has averaged 20.9 points this season and 16.7 over his last three games, with a high of 33.6 that shows what a good matchup can unlock. He's a ceiling play, because his legs and this defense give him room for a big week.
Mario Sanders is the top target for Southern Miss, with 29 percent of the team's catches and six a game over his last three games, up from 24 percent earlier in the season. He also throws now and then: in the 55-34 loss at Troy on Oct. 6 he caught eight passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns and added 75 passing yards. Louisiana is about average against receivers, so nothing here should slow that volume. He has averaged 20 points this season and 25 over his last three games, and his 25-point average over that span dwarfs Southern Miss receiver Kaden Saunders's 9.5, so Saunders stays on the bench. Sanders is a safe floor, since few receivers anywhere own a share of the offense this steady.
Value
Steven Robinson is the lead back for Southern Miss, and his role is widening: he has caught three passes a game over his last three games, up from 0.7 before that. Against Arkansas State on Oct. 17 he ran 21 times for 84 yards and a touchdown and caught five passes. Louisiana has an above-average run defense, allowing 104 rushing yards a game, but the receiving work helps offset that. He has averaged 16.4 points this season, and at $5.3M he is projected for about 13.
TL;DR
Start Winfield for the ceiling and Sanders for the floor, and use Robinson's growing receiving role as the value at $5.3M.
Line (as of Oct 22): Louisiana -9.8 · Total 52.5 (context only)

News
Landry Lyddy threw for 208 yards and 1 touchdown and added 1 carry for 2 yards in Southern Miss's 23-13 loss to Arkansas State on Oct. 17, scoring 8.5 CollegeFFB points in that game. Averaging 12.1 points a game this season, Lyddy has been a steady producer and could add to that production when Southern Miss faces Louisiana on Oct. 24, at $4.9M.
Steven Robinson ran 21 times for 84 yards and 1 touchdown and caught 5 passes for 33 yards in Southern Miss's 23-13 loss to Arkansas State on Oct. 17, good for 22.7 CollegeFFB points. Southern Miss hosts Louisiana on Oct. 24. Robinson has produced 16.4 points a game this season, and at $5.3M he could remain busy in the Southern Miss backfield.
Mario Sanders had a big game in Southern Miss's 55-34 loss at Troy on Oct. 6: 8 catches for 102 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns, plus 75 passing yards and 1 passing touchdown, for 37.2 CollegeFFB points. Sanders should keep getting chances given his dual role as a receiver and passer, and he has averaged 21.1 points a game this season. At $8M, he looks like a high-ceiling WR when Southern Miss faces Arkansas State on Oct. 17.
